Hillsdale City Fire Department Frequently Asked Questions
Is the City Fire Department responds to a call within
the City limits, is the caller or property owner billed for the
service?
No, it's a service that part of your taxes covers. An exception
would be if investigation proves the "fire call" to be a deliberate
false alarm.
Can I burn items in the City and during what
hours?
Yes. Generally speaking, paper products can be disposed of in an
approved burn barrel or other container. No plant materials, soiled
diapers, plastics, toxic or hazardous materials, tires or building
materials may be burned at any time. The fire department office has
a complete list of items that cannot be burned. The items you can
burn must be properly burned during daylight hours, between dawn
and dusk. Recreational burning (i.e. bonfires, etc.) is permitted
as long as you have a burn permit, issue by the Hillsdale City Fire
Department. Call 437-6451.
Is the Hillsdale City Fire Department fully staffed by
full-time personnel?
The Fire Department includes the public safety director and four
full-time officers, plus twenty-four part-time paid firefighters.
All personnel receive weekly training. Part-time paid firefighters
are compensated for calls to fires, medical emergencies, and carbon
monoxide or smoke investigations. The full-time officers are also
responsible for equipment maintenance, educational and public
relations programs, and for property inspections and occupancy
inspections in the City's residential areas. They work closely with
industries, businesses, schools and other entities to encourage and
promote fire safety.
